Many early heat pump installations were of this type and applied as a result of the availability of freely available sources such as a nearby river. There are of course a number of issues to be overcome and not least the water quality and corrosive environment, but given the temperature range of flowing water the COP can remain in the order of 2.5 – 3.5 all year round.

These are now the most common type commercially available and dominate all market sectors. As the name suggests, they absorb heat from ambient air and reject heat to air for the purpose of heating buildings. Indeed the most common systems are in fact ‘reverse cycle air-to-air heat pumps’, which include a reversing valve plus appropriate controls and are capable of both heating and cooling.
